₹2.90 crore opening, ZERO buzz, MAJOR damage control needed

The Worst Kind of Debut

It was supposed to be a love story for the ages. With Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions backing it, a fresh on-screen pairing, and months of anticipation, ‘Chand Mera Dil’ seemed poised to charm audiences this Friday. Instead, what unfolded was nothing short of a box office catastrophe.

The romantic drama, starring Ananya Panday and Lakshya, collected around ₹2.90 crore net in India on its opening day despite releasing across nearly 4,944 shows nationwide. For a Dharma Productions film with an A-list actress, these numbers are nothing short of a disaster.

Ananya’s Career Low Point?

The Bollywood rumor mill is already buzzing with concerns. The film witnessed modest footfalls across both multiplexes and mass circuits, raising serious questions about Ananya Panday’s box office magnetism. Could this be her lowest-ever opening? Industry insiders are certainly whispering about it.

This isn’t just a bad start—it’s a potential career setback for the young actress, who has previously delivered decent openers. The chemistry that was supposed to sizzle on screen appears to have left audiences cold.

The Numbers Tell a Grim Story

The overall Hindi occupancy for the film on day one stood at around 17.31 percent, with morning shows recording only 6.62 percent occupancy while evening shows improved slightly to 19.38 percent. These are the kinds of numbers that make studio executives lose sleep.

Even more telling? While night shows performed comparatively better with 23.31 percent occupancy, the numbers still remained below expectations for a film with such high pre-release expectations.

What Went Wrong?

Despite decent advance bookings that helped give the film an initial push, and better performance in major metro cities, the film couldn’t translate buzz into ticket sales. The critical reviews certainly didn’t help—a mixed reception from critics appears to have dampened audience enthusiasm.

India TV’s review noted that while Ananya Panday puts in genuine effort with sincere performances, and Lakshya has screen presence, their chemistry has sparks in only a few scenes before disappearing in others. When your leads’ on-screen chemistry can’t carry the narrative, audiences stay home.

Can It Recover?

The big question now is: can ‘Chand Mera Dil’ bounce back over the weekend? With word-of-mouth decidedly lukewarm and only late-night shows showing marginally better performance, recovery seems unlikely. The film will need a miracle to salvage its theatrical run.

For Ananya Panday and Dharma Productions, this is a humbling reminder that star power and big production budgets alone can’t guarantee box office success. Sometimes, the magic just doesn’t happen—and audiences let you know it at the ticket window.

As the saying goes in Bollywood: you’re only as good as your opening day. And right now, ‘Chand Mera Dil’ is looking far from spectacular.
