A late-night dispute in Vijayawada escalated into a dramatic road clash on Thursday, with two young men allegedly ramming their Thar SUVs into each other on a busy stretch of road before one of them was detained by police.

What began as a personal fight reportedly over a woman soon spilled into public view, drawing alarm from motorists and local residents who watched the confrontation unfold like a scene from an action film. According to local reports, the men, identified as Rohit and Om, had once been close friends before their relationship soured over the dispute.

The confrontation took place on the High Tension Road area under the Patamata police station limits, where the two men allegedly arrived in their vehicles and began repeatedly crashing into each other. Witnesses said the SUVs were pushed and dragged along the road for around 100 metres, causing panic among people nearby. When the drivers stepped out, the situation reportedly turned even more volatile, with rods used to smash the vehicles further.

The aftermath was chaos. Bystanders and passing motorists reportedly fled the area as the loud collisions and escalating aggression created fear of a larger street fight. Police were alerted soon after and moved in to bring the situation under control. One person was detained, while the other was said to have fled the scene.

The episode has once again highlighted the increasingly dangerous way personal disputes can spill onto public roads, especially when vehicles become weapons rather than transport. In a city that sees heavy traffic and fast-growing urban congestion, such incidents can quickly endanger not just those involved but also unsuspecting commuters.

For police, the case is also a reminder of the speed with which social tensions, ego clashes and private disputes can turn into public disturbances. Officials have begun an investigation and are examining the sequence of events that led to the clash.

The Thar, a vehicle often associated with power and status, has become part of the story’s visual shock value. But behind the spectacle lies a more troubling reality: a moment of personal conflict was allowed to escalate into reckless public violence.

For Vijayawada residents, the night’s drama ended with shattered glass, damaged vehicles and one more reminder that road rage can turn a city street into a danger zone in minutes.
