BJP leader J P Nadda has defended the police action taken against student protesters during the recent Parliament march, calling it a “normal law and order situation.” His remarks came amid a sharp exchange in the Rajya Sabha over the crackdown on the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest.
New Delhi: The Upper House saw a heated debate after Opposition leaders raised concerns over the police action during the July 20 protest. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and other MPs questioned the government over the use of force against peaceful demonstrators.
Responding to the allegations, Nadda said the police acted to maintain order and that such situations are part of activism. “It is a very normal law and order situation that we have to understand. Police acted to maintain the order,” he said.
Nadda also drew a parallel to his own past as a student activist, saying he was arrested multiple times during the Emergency under Congress rule. He said activists should be prepared to face consequences and that the police acted according to the law.
He accused the Opposition of trying to politicise and sensationalise what he described as routine law and order work. “The Opposition is trying to sensationalise and politicise a law and order activity by the police,” he said.
The protest had drawn large crowds near Jantar Mantar, and clashes between police and demonstrators had triggered widespread debate. The incident has now become a key point of confrontation between the government and the Opposition in Parliament.
