India Today Group has reportedly laid off around 120 employees in four days, citing a restructuring exercise. The sudden move has sparked concern in the media industry, with employees saying the cuts came without prior notice.
New Delhi: India Today Group reportedly asked nearly 120 staff members to leave between July 20 and July 24 as part of a major internal restructuring. The layoffs are said to have affected employees across multiple verticals, including Aaj Tak, India Today TV, radio and other divisions.
According to reports, staff were told that the company was reorganising its operations. Some employees reportedly resigned after being asked to step down, while others who did not agree were terminated.
The reports also say that employees who resigned were offered two months’ full salary, while those terminated were to receive two months’ basic salary. The abrupt nature of the layoffs has created anxiety among staff and raised fresh questions about job security in newsrooms.
The development comes at a time when the media sector is under pressure from digital shifts, changing audience habits and cost-cutting. Large-scale layoffs have become more common across industries, and this latest move has added to the uncertainty facing journalists and media workers.
For many employees, the episode has also raised concerns about transparency in restructuring decisions. While the company has cited internal changes, the scale and speed of the layoffs have made it one of the biggest recent workforce reductions in Indian media.
