For a generation of Telugu cinema fans, the names Nagarjuna and Tabu together mean exactly one thing: romance. Their pairing in 90s hits defined an era of on-screen chemistry so convincing that off-screen rumours about the two followed them for a decade. Now, nearly 28 years after they last shared a frame, the duo is reportedly reuniting — but this time, the sparks flying between them may have nothing to do with love.

The reunion nobody saw coming — with a twist nobody expected

According to industry buzz, Tabu has signed on for Nagarjuna’s landmark 100th film, tentatively titled King 100. But unlike their earlier collaborations, where she was cast as his romantic lead, reports suggest Tabu will this time play a powerful antagonist with grey shades — going head-to-head with Nagarjuna rather than falling into his arms. If confirmed, it would mark a striking reversal for two actors whose names have been box-office shorthand for chemistry since the mid-1990s.

The film, directed by Karthik and produced under Annapurna Studios, is said to follow a man’s rise from poverty to business success, built around an emotional father-daughter relationship at its core. Where Tabu’s villainous character fits into that arc remains part of the mystery fuelling fan speculation.

A pairing built on nostalgia

Tabu and Nagarjuna’s screen history runs deep. They lit up hits like Ninne Pelladatha and Aavida Maa Aavide, pairings once considered among the most bankable in Telugu cinema, and Tabu even featured in a special song sequence alongside him in Sisindri. Their collaboration was so magnetic that, off-screen, speculation of a real-life romance — even a rumoured marriage — swirled through the industry for years, even though Nagarjuna was already married to Amala Akkineni at the time. Both actors have since spoken warmly, if carefully, about the bond: Nagarjuna has called Tabu a close friend whose name still makes his face light up, while Amala has said her trust in both her husband and her friend has never wavered.

Tabu confirmed her involvement in the new project herself, posting a clapboard photo on Instagram with a caption marking the start of filming — sending the reunion trending across social media months before any official villain reveal.

Why a villain role changes everything

For an actor as celebrated for range as Tabu — one of Indian cinema’s most acclaimed performers — stepping into grey-shaded antagonist territory opposite her old co-star isn’t just a career pivot, it’s a reframing of one of Tollywood’s most nostalgic pairings. Instead of a reunion built on old romantic beats, fans could be getting a face-off that tests both actors in unfamiliar territory: chemistry repurposed as conflict.

What’s next

Nagarjuna himself has kept details close to the chest. Speaking at the pre-release event for Akhil Akkineni’s Lenin, he confirmed that official updates on his 100th film will only be unveiled after July 10 — leaving fans to sit with the villain rumour a little longer. Until then, the internet has already made up its mind: this is the reunion of the year, and the twist is the whole point.
