Mullanpur: Young all-rounder Connolly delivered a match-winning debut performance, powering Punjab Kings to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in their IPL 2026 opener on Tuesday night.

Chasing 178, PBKS were in trouble at 132/5 in 16 overs before Connolly unleashed a blistering 42 off 18 balls, including four sixes and three fours. His explosive knock, combined with a quickfire 25 from the lower order, sealed the chase with two balls to spare. Connolly ended with 5/28 earlier, dismantling GT’s middle order after they posted 177/6.

The 22-year-old, bought for ₹2.5 crore in the mega auction, spoke to reporters post-match. “Debut nerves were there, but the crowd’s energy pushed me. Taking early wickets gave us momentum, and finishing the chase felt unreal,” he said, dedicating his Player of the Match award to his family.

PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer praised the youngster. “Connolly showed why we backed him big. His variations in the powerplay and that fearless batting changed the game,” Iyer noted. GT skipper Shubman Gill admitted, “We had them at one stage, but Connolly’s hitting was game-changing. Credit to PBKS depth.”

The match showcased IPL’s unpredictability. GT started strongly with Sai Sudharsan’s 52, but Connolly’s double breakthrough of Gill (28) and David Miller (14) triggered a collapse. PBKS pacers Rishi Dhawan and Harpreet Brar supported with 2/35 combined.

Fans erupted online. “What a debut! Connolly is the next big thing for IPL 2026,” tweeted Hyderabad cricket enthusiast Ravi Teja.

Connolly’s rise mirrors past IPL breakout stars. From domestic circuits to international radars, his ambidextrous spin and big-hitting draw comparisons to Rashid Khan and Hardik Pandya.

Connolly’s dream debut signals PBKS’s intent this IPL season while spotlighting fresh talent ready to dominate T20 cricket’s biggest stage.
