Hyderabad: A catchy folk-inspired track called Mutta Kalaki has exploded on Instagram, with millions grooving to its infectious beat and simple dance moves that anyone can copy.
From college students in Hyderabad to office-goers in Mumbai, users are flooding Reels with their versions of the viral dance. The song’s quirky lyrics about “egg fights” (mutta kalaki translates to playful egg-tossing games from rural Telangana) paired with upbeat percussion has made it the hottest trend this week. Hashtags like #MuttaKalakiChallenge and #EggDance have crossed 5 million posts already.
The trend started quietly when a Hyderabad-based content creator posted the first Reel last Monday. Dressed in a traditional lungi, he mimicked cracking eggs on his head while syncing perfect steps to the chorus. Within 48 hours, it hit 2 million views. Now, influencers, celebrities, and even school kids are joining in.
Local singer Ravi Teja, who claims he first remixed the folk tune for fun, spoke to this reporter. “I recorded it in my village studio thinking it’d get 1,000 views max. Now my phone won’t stop buzzing—everyone wants the original track!” he laughed. Ravi says the song draws from Holi and Sankranti games where friends playfully smash eggs.
Dance instructors love it too. “The steps are basic—two claps, hip shake, egg-crack mime. Perfect for beginners,” said choreographer Priya Reddy, who’s taught 50+ group classes this week. Her Reel with 10 students has 1.5 million likes.
Fans can’t get enough. “Finally, a desi trend that’s pure fun—no filters needed!” posted Bengaluru engineer Arjun Menon. Families are filming together, with kids leading parents in the moves. Even a Hyderabad police constable went viral doing it on duty.
The song blends rural folk with modern EDM drops, appealing across ages. Small brands are jumping in with egg-themed ads. Music labels now scout similar hidden gems from Tier-2 cities.
‘Mutta Kalaki’ proves social media’s power to turn local beats into national anthems, uniting India one playful dance at a time.
