Police in West Bengal have ramped up security measures in known trouble spots ahead of Ram Navami processions to ensure law and order during the festival.

Authorities have deployed over 5,000 extra personnel across sensitive districts like Howrah, Hooghly, and Murshidabad. This includes quick-response teams, drones for surveillance, and additional checkpoints. The move follows violent clashes during last year’s celebrations, where processions turned unruly in some areas.

Ram Navami, marking Lord Rama’s birth, draws large crowds for rallies with music and flags. Organisers must now stick to approved routes and timings, with bans on provocative slogans or weapons. Police will monitor live routes closely.

West Bengal Home Secretary Manish Jain said, “Our focus is on peaceful devotion for all communities. We urge everyone to cooperate and report issues early.” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee added, “Festivals unite us—violence has no place.”

Past incidents have raised concerns. In 2025, stone-pelting and arson marred processions in Howrah, injuring dozens. Courts have since directed states to balance rights with public safety.

Local leaders welcome the steps. “Tight security lets us celebrate freely without fear,” said BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari from Nandigram. A Muslim resident from Murshidabad noted, “Police presence calms nerves on both sides.”

Community groups held peace meetings this week. Hindu organisations promised restraint, while police trained officers in crowd control.

This year’s arrangements cover 200+ processions statewide. Technology like CCTV and AI cameras will aid monitoring.
