SS Rajamouli has given fans a major update on Varanasi, confirming that the Mahesh Babu-led epic is in its final phase with only around 80 shooting days left and the April 7, 2027 release still on track.
Speaking at an event in France, the Baahubali and RRR director said nearly 80% of the film has been shot, with all the big spectacle action sequences already completed. The team is now focusing on smaller interconnecting scenes and expects to finish principal photography by September or early October 2026.
According to Rajamouli, editing and VFX work are happening alongside the shoot, with every filmed scene quickly moving to the post-production pipeline to avoid delays. The film is being shot partly on 70mm IMAX and has been designed from the ground up for the premium format.
Reports suggest the team is gearing up for a month-long continuous shoot for one of the movie’s biggest action blocks, featuring Mahesh Babu, with elaborate sets and high-intensity stunts. The story reportedly begins in Varanasi and then travels across Antarctica, Africa, and ancient Rome before returning to the spiritual heartland.
Varanasi features Mahesh Babu in the lead, with Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran in pivotal roles, and is being mounted as a grand time-travel adventure thriller on a global scale.
