Washington, April 8: President Donald Trump has ordered a pause in US military strikes against Iran after Tehran accepted a two-week ceasefire, offering a fragile window for diplomacy amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

The announcement came late Tuesday as American jets and ships had begun positioning for potential attacks on Iranian nuclear sites and military bases. Trump, speaking from the White House, confirmed Iran’s agreement through Qatari mediators, calling it a “smart move” that averts wider war.

“Iran blinked first. They know our military is ready, but peace is always better than war,” Trump said in a televised address. The ceasefire starts immediately and requires Iran to halt missile attacks on US allies while America holds fire on its targets.

Tensions spiked last week when Iran-backed militias struck Israeli positions, prompting Trump to threaten “overwhelming force.” US carriers moved into the Persian Gulf, and B-52 bombers flew near Iranian airspace as warnings. Casualties on both sides reached dozens over five days of exchanges.

Diplomatic sources said Qatar’s Prime Minister played kingmaker, shuttling messages between Washington and Tehran. Iran’s Foreign Minister confirmed the deal on state TV, saying it proves “America cannot dictate terms alone.”

World leaders reacted swiftly. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the pause but vowed to stay vigilant. “This buys time, not trust,” he cautioned. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailed it as a “vital de-escalation step.”

Analysts see mixed signals. “Trump’s pressure worked short-term, but Iran’s nuclear programme remains the core issue,” said Michael Singh, former National Security Council official. Public opinion split along party lines—Republicans cheered strength, Democrats urged talks.

Oil prices dropped 8% on the news, easing global fears of supply disruptions. Markets rallied as the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of world oil flows, stays open.

The two-week clock ticks amid fragile trust. Successful talks could reshape Middle East security; failure risks the war both sides paused. This high-stakes breather tests Trump’s deal-making and Iran’s resolve on the world stage.
