Mumbai, April 13: Legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle, whose versatile voice defined Bollywood for eight decades and enchanted generations, died Sunday at Breach Candy Hospital here after multiple organ failure. She was 92.

Admitted Saturday for exhaustion and chest infection, Bhosle—known as the “Queen of Cabaret”—succumbed peacefully, her son Hemant confirmed. Last rites performed Monday with full state honours. Prime Minister Narendra Modi called her “a musical genius whose songs live in our hearts.”

From Shadows to Superstardom

Born September 8, 1933, into the Mangeshkar musical family, Asha navigated early struggles after father Dinanath’s death. While sister Lata Mangeshkar became “Nightingale of India,” Asha forged her path singing cabaret numbers and vamp songs initially.

Her breakthrough came with O.P. Nayyar collaborations in the 1950s. True magic sparked with R.D. Burman—professional partners turned spouses in 1980—producing experimental hits blending Western jazz with Indian melody.

Guinness World Record holder for 12,000+ songs in 20 languages, Bhosle won Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2000), Padma Vibhushan (2008), and two Grammy nominations.
